Black figure lekythos

 Black figure lekythos

While researching Greek art this vase automatically caught my eye out of all the pieces. I chose this piece because I think it is so interesting that in such an early time era pieces of art were created like this. This piece is so interesting to me because of the detail in the painting as well as the shape of the vase, the detail in the horse's body and the proportion of the body parts and the face on the man are what really caught my eye because it is not accurate but you know exactly what is going on. This vase was most likely made of clay or stone and finished and painted with pigmented glazes and colors. The purpose of this piece is for show, this piece also shows something called inscription which was a way of writing, this piece most likely is telling a story. There are many other pieces similar to this one that are used for different things like storing water and other essentials but are nowhere near as fancy. The art of inscription is a form of writing or communication in many cases the Greek used pictures and symbols. The use of this piece was to tell a story. The artwork connects to other things I learned about Greek art and Greek culture because of their people's fascination with stories and beliefs. In ancient Greece the people believed in a multitude of god which started with just a simple story and once a story was told to more and more people it became a belief, I think that the people of ancient Greece started inscription as a easy to project their stories and get them out into the community because a drawing or painting or sculpture are so much more intriguing than reading some worlds on a piece of paper, there are so many more possibilities when looking at something physical because it leaves room for imagination. I really enjoyed this piece because of the fact that this one simple object with a few drawings can tell such a big story or even distribute a message.

  1. I really enjoyed your post, and in a lot of ways this piece reminded me of the movie Hercules. My first thought to the design on the piece lead me to ask, is the figure of a traveler? Interesting piece, leaves a lot of questions.

  2. Hi Marisa,

I thought your blog was written in good detail about your impressions upon seeing this Black figure Lekythos. One thing I had learned in my own research on Ancient Greek culture and the pottery, is that a 'lekythos' is actually "a vessel used to store oil used for religious or funerary purposes" (McKeown, 2018). Your interpretation was correct in that there was a spiritual significance to this object. Something you may have wanted to include was the time period in which this was made or discovered to help establish a time frame for your post.

  3. Hey Marisa!
This was a very interesting post. The first thing I think of when I see a vessel or face like this from ancient Greece is Hercules. I have always been under the impression that all of the vases like this always told some sort of story. While I do not know the details of this story specifically, you made it pretty clear that it has spiritual significance. I always thought it was interesting that people in ancient times had all of the knowledge and skill to make something like this possible. Nice post!
